Incentive’s in March

Incentive spending per unit fell on a year-over-year basis for the ninth consecutive month in March, according to Power Information Network (PIN) data from J. D. Power.

In March average spending decreased 5.2% to $3,799 per unit.  This decrease in spending marked the first-time incentives have fallen below $3,800 per unit since June 2017.

Supply and demand are a major factor in controlling incentives and in March WardsAuto reported total auto supply fell to 68 days.  On a month-over-month basis, supply was a reduced 9 days relative to February.  



Auto Loan Interest Rates

According to Edmunds Analysis interest rates on a new vehicle loan hit its highest level in a decade.  The annual percentage rate (APR) on new financed vehicles is expected to average 6.36 percent in March, compared to 5.66 percent last year and 4.44 percent five years ago.  Only about 4 percent of all financed deals in March had zero percent interest rates.  Last year during the same month, 7.44 percent had zero percent loans.

The data from the Edmunds Analysis shows that shoppers receiving interest rates of 10 percent or higher accounted for 14.1 percent of the market in March.  That is the highest level seen since February 2008.
